EL BICICLETERO (Sevilla)

LEM’s
tenth festival begins with one of the high points that closed the festival
in 2003. El Bicicletero reappears in Gràcia after
its sensational successes, and it does so without, as yet, any imitators.
Cantes plain and simple, round-trip cantes and the fabulous
suitcase number. The return of Raúl Cantizano
and Santiago Barber’s highly acclaimed creation.
Cage dressed in polka-dot? Anyhow, flamenco deconstructed,
and the art of bicycle maintenance. Both things, on a single stage, a
unique show with a resounding reception.

LES REINES PROCHAINES (Basel)

In
the Swiss independent scene, back in 1987, a group of video and visual
artists used to mix performance, music, and cuisine. Shortly afterwards,
Les Reines Prochaines came to the throne. These days
Michèle Fuchs, Fränzi Madörin,
Muda Mathis, Barbara Naegelin and Suzanne
Zwick are armed with trumpet, sax, euphonium, accordion, synthesiser,
guitar, bass, drums… and voice, of course. They have just released
their fifth album, Protest und Vasen, and will be performing
in Barcelona, which means that their pop-punk-dada cabaret, their
incredible live show, is finally within the grasp of us long-forgotten
courtesans…

ELIANE RADIGUE (Paris)
(kalvos.org/radigue.html)

Michel
Chion says on her music that it is “infinitely discreet
compared to any of those other types of music that seem to be tugging
at your sleeve to attract your attention”. Radigue
worked with Pierre Shaeffer and Pierre Henry,
and she’s a pioneer in Europe of the use of sound as an engulfing
stream in constant motion, closer to the repetitive American school than
the European electro-acoustic one, and influenced by Eastern spirituality.
Eliane Radigue’s music has the fascinating capacity
of changing without our being aware of the change. She’s grande
doyenne of electronic music. Presents L'île re-sonante.
Essential.

PEINTURES SONORES (Arbo - Flix)

Peintures
Sonores is conceived as an interactive dramatic concert, where Joan
Bages (sound artist) and Carmen Platero (visual
artist) offer an exploration of the human body starting from its image
and the sounds that can be produced with it. The manipulation of visual
material uses superposition, fragmentation, the deconstruction of the
image, while the sound material is treated using granular synthesis technique.
Both come together by means of improvisation and randomness, and evolve
in real time.

XEDH (Vitoria)

This
is the first of the projects selected this year for the OFF section. Conceived
by Miguel Ángel García as a vision of industrial
past and future landscapes, the music distilled by Xedh
is a music of immersion, inscribed in a broad and evocative current that
makes textures and their alternation an excellent narrative element. A
music of planes where silence envelops perverse rhythms and opens gaps
through which oppressive atmospheres slip in - pulsing music, inviting
us on an inner journey, full of images and colours, of a strangely pictorial
quality.

JUDITH JUILLERAT (Besançon)

After
ten years of work at her studio in Besançon, a dazzling appearance
when selected by Björk for the Army Of Me compilation,
in aid of Unicef, marked the start of Judith Juillerat’s
journey abroad, beginning with the interesting album Soliloquy
(2005) and some important concerts in 2006 at the Transmediale in Berlin,
the Kilbi in Dudingen, Reykjavik, Basel… Juillerat
constructs her music with both analogue and digital elements, it is inspired
by emanations of Teutonic essences and takes us to visit the surface of
moons of icy beauty and bluish dawns. A music as beautiful as it is disturbing.

MUSHKA (Badalona)

Mushka's
music is lazy, mysterious, winding, Mediterranean, complex yet simple
in appearance, luminous, energetic, visual, emotional and with a rhythmic
clarity that sustains interwoven melodies both thoughtful and sincere.
Its members have backgrounds as seemingly diverse as the post-punk band
B-Violet (Blanca Cereceda, bass, and
Merche Rosales, drums) on the one hand, and the classically
trained (Lluna Aragón, violin and Mar
Serra, piano) on the other. The quintet tops off its rhythmic
tapestry with Xavier Carbonell, formerly of Camàlics,
on percussion. Prepare for an impeccable live show from the band that
is the great revelation of this year.

THE WALTER THOMPSON ORQUESTRA (New

Soundpainting
is a language devised by Walter Thompson; it is formed
of 1500 symbols that allow the direction of groups of improvisers in real
time. Thompson simultaneously conducts musicians, poets,
dancers... Soundpainting was performed in the LEM festival in
1999 and 2001. It was an unforgettable experience. This time it features
the following line-up: Oriol Vilella, guitar; Josep
Lluís Redondo, guitar; Roger Fortea,
bass guitar; Merche Rosales, drums; Pau Torres,
sampler; Imma Udina, sax; Agustí Martínez,
clarinets, saxes; Arnau Vilardebó, acting, ukulele;
Sebastià Malèvol, poetry and the choral
group Sonorum Project with Oscar Vidal
and Adolf Murillo.

MIKA VAINIO (Helsinki)

Already
well-known for being fifty percent of Pan Sonic, a true
icon of electronic minimalism over recent years, Vainio
aims his solo work at spaces frequently beyond rhythm, and uses the electronic
processing of acoustical elements to create aural textures, paving the
way for improvisation… in short, it offers a lesser known and very
evocative dimension of the sound universe that has placed Finland on the
international scene. The press call him “the more dangerous half”:
this double concert will undoubtedly be as “dangerous” as
it is energetic.

BARBARA MORGENSTERN (Berlin)

The
elegance of minimal expression; the meeting of piano, voice and electronics.
Touching melodies, reflections on global culture, the stages of happiness
or the ages of life, or why it always seems to us that the grass is greener
on the other side of the street, short stories, travel journals, fieldwork
sketches... Barbara Morgenstern, who has released nine
titles since 1998, captivated the world with Nichts Muss (Monica
Ent. 2003) and embarked on a lengthy world tour, which ended happily with
the beautiful album The Grass is Always Greener (2006). In this
concert we’ll have the privilege of witnessing the moment of brilliant
creative maturity that this very special composer is living. Don’t
miss it: it heals.

Xyramat,
formerly Maat - multiple personalities of composer Dörthe
Marth, a.k.a. Black Bunny or Xyrabunny
as a DJ – who has been, since 1990 and with half a dozen albums
released, a singular personality in the German electronic scene. Committed
to the search for freedom in the increasingly standardised field of music,
she uses sound sources as emotional tools to reflect the true macrocosm
of values: violence, war, authority, discrimination, especially that of
women.

FAMELIARS (Eivissa)

There
is a new, fresh, Mediterranean music, fed by the currents of contempporary
popular music. LEM attempts to prove this theory in several concerts in
this year’s festival. One of these is that of Fameliars.
Among its members are some key names from the islands’ scene, associated
with projects like Neo Tokyo, Neo Sol,
Yeldings… diverse origins, including stylistically:
those of Kiko Barrenengoa and Toni Torres
(guitars), Mariano Torres, piano and vocals, Ferran
Pascual, bass guitar and Andrea Fernández,
drums. Luminous music of magical laziness. Their first CD, an “oasis-album”,
according to the critics, testifies to this.

CARO SNATCH (Newcastle)

Caro
Snatch’s musical career began in 1998 with a serious back
injury, a double-decker bus for a home and a Korg Poly-800 synthesiser.
During her recovery, Caro researched sound synthesis
and musical theory. Her concerts began in 2002. Old sound generating machines,
sequencer, voice, effects, form the basis of her shows. Her music is hypnotic,
her poetry is multilingual; she uses improvisation, loops, and the combination
of different genres. Based in Berlin since 2005 and following the recent
release of her new EP, Es muss sein, she begins the “Es
muss sein – dare to shine Tour”, which will bring her for
the first time to Barcelona.

RADIAN (Wien)

It
has been said that the release of Juxtaposition, the first album
by Radian, put the Vienesse scene on the map. Without
doubt, that first album, as much as the recent Rec.Extern, reveals
a fascinating music. John Norman (bass), Martin
Brandlmayr (drums) and Stefan Nemeth (synthesiser)
are able to create a sound tapestry as rich as it is appealing. How do
acoustic instruments and electronics swap roles? In the beginning, an
unusual working practice: “micro-recordings” of instruments
passed through the synthesiser (John McEntire is behind
some of them). The result: a live show that’s hard to forget.

MARAM TRIO (Barcelona)

Marina
Albero (psaltery), Marc Egea (hurdy gurdy) and
Mariona Sagarra (vocals), represent the meeting point
of instruments of unusual beauty as well as that of ancient and contemporary
music, improvisation and electronica. After a working process lasting
many months, they present Sine Mare Nihil, a commission by three
festivals for three of the most internationally renowned Catalan musicians.
In the quest of a daring beauty and the creation of poetic universes,
visions and new imaginings, these three artists bring tradition up to
date, explaining the present using ancestral instruments and making them
talk to modern technology.

From
their first project, Omega Cinco, to Les Aus,
Dalmau Boada and Arnau Sala have made
a journey from the most purist hardcore to the world of improvisation.
Their conceptual voyage wasn’t their only one: two American tours,
one European tour, consecutive projects (The Cheese appears
half-way through), a few albums, a Philadelphia residency in 2004, have
helped to make Les Aus a name on many people’s
lips. Now relocated to Catalonia, this group, according to many, is one
to keep an eye on. Music on the loose, a surprise…

This
trio made up of Joane Hétu, sax, vocals, Diane
Labrosse, sampler, Danielle P. Roger, drums
and percussion, is a musical adventure as special as it is legendary.
Since 1980, these three women have developed a sound universe absolutely
unique. In their hands, improvisation becomes a tool to show the listener
scenes from imaginary films, sound tapestries in which electronics and
acoustic instruments swap roles. Elements of exploration: the unorthodox
use of instruments, their musical chemistry. Results: music in free-fall,
overflowing, with dangerous leaps. An ode to the parachute.

NOISE DREAMS MACHINA (València)

Oscar
Martín is a visual artist who came to sound art through
working with Leopoldo Amigo, Bartolomé
Ferrando and Llorenç Barber. He mixes
in his work different codes and artistic languages: sound, performance,
video, photography, installation… a notable example was the sound
installation-performance Mekanicas Moebius, made with
Javier Jiménez and presented in many European
countries, as well as his participation in the Grupo de Intervención
Artística, with the performance Sorolls de Guerra,
given in many Spanish cities. He also wrote music for dance and video.
In Noise Dreams Machina he explores the sound aspect
of his work.

Sesam-o, consisting of Jordi Moncho,
Ferrán Vilanova, David Curto and
Ignasi Corella: three musicians and a video artist who

BankRobber
is to blame for the appearance of Guillamino’s
new CD, Somnis de llop, as is clearly stated in his press release.
It also explains that his first album, 1 dia, was released in
2003. That year’s LEM brochure reads: “Guillamino
has entered another dimension, probably unique, from which in
only a few months he has attracted the attention of many people”.
And, further on, it defined his music as a trip “from Soul to Sardana"
(Catalan traditional dance). Well, three years later, Guillamino
rules that dimension and Soul and Sardana has transfigured into
a unique style: his own. Guillamino returns to LEM.

says she began to compose by chance and to sing by accident, as with most
good things. The truth is that this electronic arts and digital design
graduate has become the creator of beautiful music and small doses of
evocative electronic pop. In two years, ever since her début at
the Mau-Mau in Barcelona, she has shone in live shows (just recently in
her Sónar), until she ended up on the Berlin label Monika Enterprise,
where she’s working on the fourth part of the album 4 Women

Barcelona. Over ten years of work, sessions in countless clubs, residencies,
festivals… as a co-founder of Wah Wah Records,
a cult store in the city, Shakira has created audiences
and passed on information to the local scene, collaborated in scheduling,
widened our world of reference… what is still unknown to many is
her work as a composer, creator of soundscapes, inventor of collages.

Anne
Montagard, clarinet and bass clarinet, Yanis Frier,
guitar, Lionel Malric, keyboards, accordion, electronics,
are members of the collective Le Grand Chahut who decided
in 2004 to give birth to this project of amplified improvisation. Jazz,
but not just jazz, noise, but not just noise, rock, perhaps, electronica...
the ability of these three instrumentalists to break the connections between
instruments and genres is remarkable; they use intensity, the creation
of fictional sound scenarios, the timbric search, the breakdown of codes,
to create a music where the surprise factor is fundamental.

It
wouldn’t be hard to claim that this trio brings together the essential
names in contemporary music: the fortunate union of multi-instrumentalist
Tim Hodgkinson (lap steel guitar, electronics, clarinets)
with master analogue synth player Thomas Lehn and the
restless drummer and percussionist Roger Turner is something
that mustn’t be missed, given that Konk Pack is
right now one of the most exciting improvisation groups in the world.
Between them they boast over a hundred albums and are largely responsible
for the way music sounds today. Simply not to be missed.

for her different ways of preparing the electric guitar, exploring its
possibilities and those of its amplification. Krebs is
an improviser and composer, and among her vast list of collaborators is
Steffi Weismann, performer, vocal artist and video creator, who combines
in her sound work techniques that range from the use of computer programs

SONS OF BRONSON (Barcelona)

The
Mano Dura label has its best asset in Sons of
Bronson and their “slap-in-the-face” of sound. Toni
López and Jesús Brotons, members
of the sound projects Bukkake and Música
Veneno, as well as music journalists, paid tribute to Charles
Bronson (of course), Richard Widmark and James
Woods, by starting this project in 2001. But it wasn’t
until the release of the tremendous cd Niñas y Marisco (2006)
that the city fell at their feet and their few concerts of sickly industrial
wrinkliness, their sonic pillage and their free-death-ambient plunderphony
have exalted everyone with the clear statement that there’s been
enough whingeing and now it’s time for some action.

Olga
Molchanova, a.k.a. Sonic Bitch, was born on
the very border between Europe and Asia. She has dealt with nomads and
aristocrats in Kazahstan’s Gulag and since her childhood she’s
been exposed to an explosive mix of music (as well as lifestyles). The
result is her music, which is eclectic, cinematic, melancholic, Russian,
jazzy, dark and heavenly all at once. She currently lives in London, and
from there she has taken her music to the United States, South Africa,
Europe, Russia... alternating her collaborations with The Orb
and Talvin Singh with appearances at S&M
clubs such as the Brixton Mass-Torture Garden.

ORIOL LAGÉ / ÀLEX MIOTA (Barcelona-Cuenca)

Àgape:
ritual. LEM ends its 2006 festival with the coming together of music and
words with taste and scent. A marriage of poetry, music and gastronomy.
And at an exceptional venue. Let’s begin with taste, sight and scent:
Oriol Lagé, psychologist, poet and cook, founded
the OT restaurant where Álex Miota
from Cuenca turned up. The rapport of both creators is renowned, and with
the music, poetry and wine which follow, they will mix a mushroom cream,
a marinade of artichokes and quails, steamed bouchon mussels, wild boar
stew with prunes and variations on a "musician" dessert.

ACCIDENTS POLIPOÈTICS (Barcelona)

They
were featured in the LEM Festival of October ’99. In the confined
space of the café-theatre they tested their explosive mixture of
phonetic poetry, visual poetry, poly-poetry, plain poetry… and humour.
The shock wave is still expanding: Theros and Metlikovez
have now given over six hundred performances. Someone defined
them as “the triumph of the everyday over the mediocre, of simplicity
over pretension, paella over art”. Maybe the market is a natural
habitat for them. Ágape will be your host. Enjoy!

be busy choosing the wines in close collaboration with the cooks, musicians
and the poets, he’ll also read his river-poetry, which is more than

Matriu
(Womb) is a section that runs throughout LEM 2006 and its importance in
the programme is substantial. Of a hundred participants, fifty are women,
and this, conceptually, defines the present moment in the history of the
festival, since it’s a statement about our intentions regarding
equality in future programmes. Nevertheless, there’s still much
to be done, and Matriu proposes, in the first instance,
