PHILIPPE FAUJAS (F)
Systeme Sonore XI
A sonographic installation
This edition of Lem opens with an installation by this outstanding French artist whose work originally unfolded in the realm of visual arts-he also has a degree in cinematography- and later, from 1990 onwards, developed in the field of sonic creativity. He has worked with Masaki Iwana, butöh dancer, and has presented his Sonic System in various venues, such as Dublin's Modern Art Museum or Hamburg's Stubniz. Systeme Sonore XI consists in eleven sonographies (sounds displayed in an exhibitory manner -as if they were paintings or photographs). Faujas stresses the fact that his work doesn't belong to the realm music nor to that of audio-art.

CARL STONE (USA)
Currently considered as one of the most prominent figures in American composition, his career unfolds between San Francisco and Japan. His studies in composition with Morton Subotnick and James Tenney led him to exclusively concentrate from 1972 onwards on electronic music; subsequently spread over various continents, the development of his music finally led him -instancing his increasing interest in the Far East- to collaborations with Yuji Takahashi, Kazue Sawai, Michiko Akao and Otomo Yoshihide among others. He has also collaborated with Stelarc and Z'ev. Credited with numerous prizes and commissions in different countries, the music of Carl Stone embodies an extraordinary sensibility, featuring continuous planes which at times evoke or present soundscapes occasionally displayed in spirals of unexpected abstraction. A global keystone to the new music Stone is an imprescindible, popular and advanced artist whose records have been released by a wide range of labels from all over the world.
"Participation of Carl Stone has been made possible in part through support from The Fund for U.S. Artists at International Festivals and Exhibitions, a public private partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, the U.S. Department of State, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Rockefeller Foundation, with additional support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and administered by Arts International."

CHRISTIAN WOLFARTH (CH)
Diploma in Cookery in the 70s, distinguished pupil of Billy Brooks at Bern's Swiss Jazz School and of Pierre Favre at the Lucerne's conservatory in later decades, Wolfarth is one of those rare instances in which a musician brings together sensibility and technique to an equal extent and one who has deepened in the expressive possibilities of percussion, taking it to seldom frequented dimensions. At times his explorations are hypnotic, deep, and rather physical and, on other occasions, rational and mathematical. His work has often featured collaborations with dancers. In his discography the names of such privileged partners as Hans Koch, Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Albert Mangelsdorff, Alex von Schlippenbach or Günter Müller stand out.

COLECTIVO HISPANO-SUIZA (E-CH)
Born out of an encounter of musicians and visual artists centred on experimentation with sonic space -held on April 2000- this fortunate dual nationality collective -consolidated around Jesús Turiño (bass, loops), Jan C. Schacher (digital sound, max/msp) and Pelayo F. Arrizabalaga (turntables/wind instruments)- aims to create a dense and energetic music in the line of the most audacious European improvisers. In their music, processed acoustic instruments, lo-fi elements and digital sound sources are organically combined in vast, continuously morphing pieces which often bring back names such as Can or Faust and yet inevitably refer us to the very present.

ELI GRAS (BCN)
Founder member of the legendary Obmuz (together with Alain Wergifosse and Quicu Samsó), Gras (bass, prepared guitars, toys, invented instruments and other artifacts) is an artist with a nurtured personal language and a vast background stretching from Greek music and funk, through pop and minimalism, to the broad universe of improvisation, which she uses to articulate a discourse of essential experiences (or, as she likes to put it, animism in relation to sound objects). A world which is also successfully portrayed both in her video graphic and literary works.

BARCELONA'S MUNICIPAL BAND
Once again, the collaboration between Barcelona's Municipal Band and LEM will provide some of the most inspiring moments of the festival. This annual project, held for three consecutive years, will on this occasion feature four different composers As in previous instances, the nourishing encounter between the powerful wind section of the band and the imagination of these tremendously original musicians will surely cause sparks to fly. Besides, this event will be displayed for first time in the comfort of l'Espai, away from the cold damp Autumn air.
KOJI ASANO (J)
"Fairies In The Wardrobe" (premiere)
This artist is mainly known in our country in his electronic facet, which this year reached a climax with the release of his excellent quadruple CD The Last Shade of Evening Falls and the subsequent Quoted Landscape (Solstice Records). However, the activity of Asano as a composer already had a fruitful relationship with chamber music in the "Megapoles" project by Bruno Letort, which was premiered in Paris by the Smith Quartet in 1999. On this occasion Koji's work will be scored for 60 instruments: disquieting atmospheres and eastern wisdom for Symphonic Band.

PASCAL COMELADE (F)
"L'argot du bruit"
In spite of his reputation as a toys' musician, in the past Comelade never hesitated to compose for ensembles using such instruments nor to carry out adaptations of Rhythm & Blues classics played in fanfare-like fashion with astounding energy. This facet of the composer reached its peak on May the 1st with the premiere -held in Ceret by eight ensembles (150 musicians)- of L'argot du bruit . This is the very piece that the Municipal Band will be performing in this 2001 Encounter: a new opportunity to meet the world of this creator of lucid dreams in a medium yet unknown to our city and featuring the collaboration of Jakob Draminsky.

For some years now, this tireless sonic agitator has been working in the Swiss electronic scene without, on doing so, parting with his wind instruments. Founder member of Clonicos, he is currently involved in FMOL Trio, an ensemble to which he contributes with a large dose of his inventiveness. Improviser, composer of great sensibility, tireless collaborator in countless projects, he recently composed for countertenor Luis Alves da Silva and had his symphonic work premiered by the Zug's Kadetten Orchester.

JOAN SAURA (BCN)
Although Saura is best known in Barcelona as an improviser and sampler player through his activity with the Trio Local, the wide scope of his solo projects, innumerable collaborations, works as composer for both dance projects and film soundtracks embodies a rich and astonishing range. The opportunity of attending the premiere of one of his compositions for Symphonic band constitutes without a doubt yet another attraction for this night of wind and brass.

UN CADDIE RENVERSÉ DANS L'HERBE (BCN)
One of the various names behind which Dídac P. Lagarriga hides; one of the few Barcelonian artists who has repeatedly managed to cross over discographic boundaries and toured the American continent (notably, his collaboration with poet Edwin Torres), by means of a casual encounter between dada and electronics usually set within a "lounge" atmosphere. Founder of the interesting and forerunner Minim label, he is in charge of the first djeing session of the Festival.

Just over two years separate the birth of this project by David Cobas (Vigo, 1975) and Borja Flames (Valencia, 1975) from the excellent results of the recordings released by the group on a promotional basis. STEFAN VINCKEVLEUGEL (B)
His enigmatic, independent talent doesn't seem to fit in any trend. Defying classification, torn between traditional music and an extremely subtle use of technology, this poet -who's been compared to Brel- uses Flemish language to create a tragicomic universe; a realm full of surrealistic miniatures often lost in a world of love and pain consisting in songs, poems and instrumental passages among which his soul struggles. His books, records or dramatized live performances are yet unknown in Barcelona: a unique opportunity to meet and enjoy the work by this artist.

CYRIL LEFEBVRE - JOSEPH RACAILLE - JEAN PIERRE ARNOUX (F)
The incredible Cyril Lefebvre (does someone remember the excellent concerts given by this one-man band in the 80's?) comes to Barcelona along with Joseph Racaille, one of the most sensitive and interesting musicians from the neighbouring country (remember ZNR, together with Hector Zazou?) and Jean-Pierre Arnoux on drums. Members of Paris' Ukelele Club since 1982, this luxurious trio -well versed in traditional Hawaian chants, exotic songs and melodies both popular and wise, sorcerers of popular and traditional music- will offer us a long expected concert. Welcome to the legend.

RYO CO. (J)
Born in the tropical rain forest some 61 years ago, daughter of mummy Melange, the tiny Ryo Co. didn't receive an ordinary education. She developed an interest in sound during her sampling adventures among her forest friends. Five years ago she offered her musicianship to the great smoke and after a tour round the karaoke scene, she became a sound engineer. Such is the start of Ryo Co's biography, one of the freshest and most interesting proposals from electronic London endorsed by the best venues and by Exposure Magazine, with whom she produces -along with her Melange label-endless activities -both live performances and sessions. A not-to-be-missed discovery.

MANEL PUGES (BCN)
Here we have one of those key characters, often obscure, that to
a large extent support Barcelona's creative scene. Drummer and guitarist
of damned, absurd or prophetic bands in the late 70s, he drifted during
the 90s towards electronics with the Mohochemie project and subsequently
developed his solo activities and collaborations with Enric Casasses and
painter Stella Hagemann. The drifting, heavy atmospheres by Pugés-Ulf
Yong, display a not to be missed personal and magical sonic universe.

Inventor of "dental floss" , by which electric guitars sound "as if a flying saucer squadron were bombing the earth" and of "balance" -a system which enables a single alto sax to sound as if it were a hundred saxes, is one of the most intelligent and witty soloists that the New York scene produced in the eighties. The list of his collaborations includes names such as Derek Bailey, Tom Cora, Zeena Parkins, Fred Frith or Bill Laswell. ROVA SAXOPHONE QUARTET (USA)
Since the foundation of this seminal ensemble in the Bay of San Francisco in 1977 thirty world tours have served to stir the general acclaim and appreciation of audiences. Originally started as post-bop free-jazz this project has settled into an splendid musical territory: a cosmic meeting point gathering all the current music trends; a saxophone quartet which may sound like a jazz orchestra, a string ensemble or an African drum choir... Their current line up -Bruce Ackley, soprano sax, Steve Adams, alto sax, Jon Raskin, baritone sax, Larry Ochs, tenor sax- has collaborated with some of the most relevant musicians on the international scene. The wide range of events to which Rova has been invited spreads from Kassel's Documenta to the 30th aniversary of Coltrane's Ascension in San Francisco... a true lesson on freedom and openness in the approach to music.

LÊ QUAN NINH - MARTINE ALTENBURGER - NUNO REBELO - VALÈRIE MÉTIVIER - MARÍA MUÑOZ - PEP RAMIS (F/P/BCN)
Such an encounter can't be summed up in so little a space: three musicians of the stature of percussion genius Lê Quan Ninh, experienced cellist Martine Altenburger and surprising guitarist Nuno Rebelo in a collaboration with three extremely interesting choreographers: the French Valèrie Métivier and the Catalonian Pep Ramis and María Muñoz (founder members of the Mal Pelo company). Aside from drawing a huge amount of resources from the guitar he has founded a truly universal school. Devoted to Argentinian electronics this monographic night opens with the music of Pablo Reche, a personal laboratory exploring the multiple levels of the electronic domain: an emotional level in which textures and silences function as links connecting to the listener's intimacy; another one consisting in the articulation/disarticulation of noise as a living, morphing element and a more dynamic and surprising level on which a true compositional talent may be traced. Conceived as an exclusively live sonic situation, displaying variable durations and feedback intensities, this ensemble -the amount of members also being variable- created by Alain Wergifosse, Elisabet Gras, Ferran Fages, Francesc Díaz-Melis, Jesús Brotons, Miquel Ibáñez y Rosa Arruti turns out to be a true summary of the different sonic strategies that have existed in Barcelona during the last five years, putting forward instantaneous electronic improvisation as a party of shifting protagonism and multiple resources among which the listener may wander, enter, leave or come in again. ELECTROCUGAT (Zaragoza/BCN)
Just a few months after the release of "Visconti con Hielo" and those expecting new things to come out from Spanish pop are already on their guard, making Electrocugat the talk of the town without even having heard them. We though it a must to finish the Festival with the hedonism and casualness of these hardly introspective, extremely glamorous trio. A refreshing lounge -and yet much more than that-, samplers which do not only stand for orchestras and Paula Mori's voice. Enjoy the party.
Festival's Closing Party

ATUN (Ayora)

For those who weren't able to listen to them at Sonar and those joining us in the farewell to LEM 2001.
